SUMMER: The OCM and PSYCH way!

LEGAZPI CITY , Philippines – The mayor who made Donsol, Sorsogon the whale shark capital of the world died Thursday while being treated at a hospital after suffering from heat stroke. Mayor Jerome Alcantara, who was running for re-election under the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), was campaigning last Tuesday when he collapsed from heat stroke. Alcantara, 77, was rushed to the Estevez Memorial Hospital and was later transferred to the Aquinas Hospital where he succumbed to complications of the stroke at 11:25 a.m. on Thursday.” - The Philippine Star Newspaper

They say that the month of March is the “Fire Prevention Month.” During this month, a lot of fire incidents happens, including death and people blame it for being too hot. But being too hot is just because March is also the start of summer! Summer is just one of the temperate seasons here in the Philippines. The Philippines is along the equator line which naturally is affected by the direct heat from the sunlight. That is why summer is naturally hot. During this season, different body-cooling paraphernalias including food, beverage and services are offered and people most likely to pick them to ease the hotness that they are experiencing. Among thesse body cooling foods, beverages and services include:

  1. Eating halo-halo

Halo-halo is the most famous delicacy for Filipinos during summer. It is composed of different ingredients, usually fruits and other sweets topped with crushed ice and evaoprated milk. What makes it special is because you will not only get a treat but also you're body will feel relief and cool. That is why halo-halo is on top of the list of the treats to find during summer.

  1. Milk Tea

Drinking tea or milk tea is a lot cheaper compared to drinking coffee. Iced coffee will cost you at least more than a hundred bucks while milk tea, with the cup being venti will cost only around P75 minimum. Dr inking milk tea may also come with different delicious “add-ons” or “sinkers” which only ranges from P10-P15. That is why if you want a cold drink and a treat all together, we suggest buyng milk tea. A beverage not only healthy but also suits the weather because it cools our body.

  1. Iced Coffee

Of course we do not want to be biased that is why iced coffee is still on the list. This type of coffee that we are talking about is sometimes an indicator of what class you belong to because of its relatively expensive price. But nonetheless, thi beverage will really suit not only summer but every season as they serve hot or cold drinks.

  1. Travelling

Summer is the best time of the year to go swimming at the beach or visit places with cold climates. There are lots of beaches and resorts in our country like in Laguna, Boracay, Subic, and CamSur. If you do not like getting wet but want to escape the hot weather of Manila then go to places like Baguio and Tagaytay where the climate is cold. If you cannot bear the Philippine heat then go to other countries with cold climates like China, South Korea, U.S.A, and the others alike.

  1. Going to mall

If you do not have the budget to go travelling then go to malls instead. The malls are always air conditioned keeping you cool from the summer heat. One mall that I can suggest is the SM Mall of Asia where they have an ice skating rink that lets you play on the ice.

Those are just some trends every summer which can coll our bodies. Common denominator? They are all cold or iced! Selling ice becomes a very profitable venture this summer so better start thinking what products require ice or start making them.

However this summer, it is not only our bodies who were greatly affected. Our behavior is also affected as heat contributes to the locomotion of our body and how we react to stimuli of the environment.

Psychological approach on heat

It has been long accepted that there is a relationship between heat and aggression. Historically researchers believed that this relationship was linear; as it gets hotter, people tend to become more aggressive. Yet over time, research has shown that this relationship is a bit more complex. In fact, many factors contribute to this relationship:

Time of day, population density, and holidays to name a few. Even more recently, research has shown that once the heat gets so high, there is a decrease in aggression (a curvilinear relationship). So when people get too hot, they will not engage in aggressive behavior. Rather the opposite, they will even become lethargic, even passive.

Another significant factor in how we respond to heat is a person’s expectations. When I go to hot yoga, I expect the room to be hot and I am dressed and mentally prepared for the heat. As a result, I welcome the heat and allow it to help me relax. Yet when I did not expect to be hot at my office, I was not mentally prepared. I was dressed in business clothes and attempting to provide therapy. So I saw the heat as bothersome, inconvenient, and my mood thus became negative.

During summer, In general our expectation of early summer weather in Philippines is that it would be warm - not consistently in the high 90’s and 100’s. Also our shock and discomfort could also be related to the fear that if it’s this hot in June, what will July and August weather bring us. This thought might create anticipatory stress and anxiety about the possibility of continued (and increased) hot weather.

Recent research has also shown that when hot weather is also paired with high humidity, we tend to see increased irrational and irritable behaviour. Furthermore people have a decreased ability to sleep, lower activity levels, decreased vigilance to safety, slower reaction time, and decreased performance.

So how do we cope with the summer heat? Unless you can financially afford to schedule vacations to cooler destinations during summers, you most likely are going to be faced with a hot summer with high temperatures and high humidity. Here are some suggestions to be more prepared for the heat - physically and mentally:

· Dress appropriately. Allow your body to cool down by wearing comfortable and weather- appropriate clothing.

· Stay hydrated. Do not forget to drink fluids.

· Have reasonable expectations. Do not expect to have the same energy levels that you have in the cooler weather, especially when engaging in activities outside. Remember that your attention and desire to follow through may be reduced. Plan to work and play at a slower pace.

· Be safe. Make self-interested decisions about how much exposure you have to the heat. Plan your outdoor activities during the cooler hours of the day.

· Do not fight the heat mentally. If your schedule requires being in the heat, then accept your situation and embrace it. As one of my favourite yoga instructors frequently says, "Work with the heat".

· Remember to breathe. Taking deep breaths and focusing on what you can accomplish versus "fighting" the heat you might find yourself less likely to be bothered by the increased temperatures.

· Smile. Finally do not under estimate the power of a smile. When you feel frustrated and overwhelmed, just smiling can positively affect your mood and become lethargic, even passive.

OPM as they struggle to keep at pace with the foreign songs and artists

I have not been updating my blog since December and I was not able to continue my last blogpost becaue of busy schedule and laziness so I am here again to post something, my personal opinion about the problem of our OPM(Original Pinoy Music) songs and artists today. This is actually a transcript of my speech in my SPEECOM class.

................................................................................................................................................
Maestro Ryan Cayabyab said to one of his songs, “Kay Ganda ng ating musika. Ito ay atin, sariling atin. At sa habang buhay, gamitin natin.” Very beautiful lyrics with a very explicit message, to support our own music or simply to support OPM.  Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, I am Allain Vincent B. Gapuz and today, I will talk about OPM Songs and Artist as they struggle to keep pace with the foreign songs and artists.

OPM or Original Pinoy Music was created for the Filipino’s identity. We are blessed with culture particularly music and artists and musicians wants the Philippines to have its own musical identity. Basically, OPM started as traditional music where we hear various local dialects accompanied by various indigenous musical instruments. Some of this music was also accompanied by dances which are very cultural in the Philippines. Then, this type of music evolved as time progresses into some sort of love songs which we call kundiman. From this period, our local musical industry evolved.
In the 20th century where OPM is still influential and strong, many Filipino artists and musicians were recognized all around the globe. Examples of them were Mr. Ryan Cayabyab, the APO Hiking Society, Pilita Corales, Joey Ayala and the like. Also from this period, our music industry most especially the OPM became very strong, influential and well-liked by the Filipinos. This was also the time when we participate in various music competitions around the world. For instance when Ms. Pilita Corales won the best performer award in the 1st Tokyo Music Festival in 1972. She bested highly-regarded international artists including the singer of I honestly Love You, Olivia Newton-John. As you can see, our local music industry way back decades and centuries ago was very influential and well supported by the whole Philippines but what happened today?
Today, our Filipino artists and OPM struggles to be on top of the Filipinos hearts. I am not saying that the generation of Filipinos today take for granted the existence of OPM in the 21st century but with all the foreign music icons and songs that are recognized around the world and most especially here in the Philippines, OPM is not given the chance to show its evolution. OPM today is evolving. OPM keeps on keeping at pace with all the foreign and international songs and artists. An example was given to you a while ago. Today, what we hear and see with the foreign songs and artists, we can hear and see it also with OPM songs and artists. For example are the achievements of our local music and artists.
Christian Bautista, Aiza Siguerra, Charice and Juris have something in common. They were all recognized as Asiansation or Filipino music aritists of the 21st century who were given the chance to show their talents and music all around the globe. Each conqured the Asia and the Americas and was well applauded by crowd. Another is just a recent happening where Sarah Geronimo was awarded as the Best Musical Asian Artist of the Philippines in the Mnet Asian Music Awards. What is ironic is that they are all Filipinos but their music and talents were recognized in other countries. Also in terms of performance, we can now go with the current trend. I would like to show you a video of a recent concert staged here in the Philippines by a Filipino music artist and how we can compare it with the performance of an international artist.

You see that OPM has so much to offer if we will just learn how to support it well. I am not saying that we should ignore foreign songs and artists as they contribute well to the evolution of our OPM but if we will just let the evolution of our OPM be seen and heard then I think, more and more Filipino music artists will be inspired to make more music and hopefully, recognized by international music industry as well. Thank you very much and again, good afternoon!

2012 Memories: A year-end countdown of experiences

Time flies so fast. Parang kahapon lang ay nag-celebrate tayo ng Christmas at New Year at nagsalu-salo sa noche buena and media noche pero ngayon, matatapos na naman ang 2012 and we will already be welcoming, in a few hours, the year of the water serpent 2013.

But before the year ends, gusto ko sana balikan and mga memories ko this 2012. Lahat ng nangyari, good or bad, I want to share to you all.

NUMBER 1: College Entrance Test Results

2012 for me was the year where many ups and downs happened, especially in my social life. First I want to start with the results or my entrance tests. But, hindi talaga. Hindi talaga will ni Lord na doon ako mag-aral so I didn't pass Ateneo.

Ateneo results was not the first one to come out. DLSU-CAT results came out first and I was so happy that I passed. So sabi ko,"Ayos 'to! Magandang start  for the year kasi at least meron na akong sure school na papasukan for college."

So after DLSU, Ateneo, UST and UP came next and unfortunately, I didn't pass UPCAT and Academic Placement in USTET. It's was a tough decision for me what university to choose between UST and DLSU because I am cosidering factors like the course, the slot and the tuition fee. But it is really God's plan for me to study in De La Salle University so I just accepted it.

NUMBER 2: High School Memories/Graduation

After 8 years in Flos Carmeli Institution of Quezon City and 4 years in Claret School of Quezon City, sa wakas! 4 years nalang at tapos na ako mag-aral!

I really can't forget 4th year high school since that year talaga ako nag-shine in terms of having a part in the batch. Kasi that year, I was given the chance to direct our choral elocution which I was very proud of. Kahit hindi kami nanalo (ahem, excuse me Ursais! Minus one! Joke! :D) proud ako sa work ko at sa classmates ko kasi alam kong binigay nila ang best nila at binigay ko rin ang best ko.

Another is yung death ng aming batch mate na si Yuki. Yuki was not very close to me pero nag-uusap kami since chorimate ko siya for 2 years. And kasama ako sa invited niya on his 18th birthday celebration. We don't talk too much kaya late ko na nalaman yung condition niya before our graduation. I remember, he was still able to ask me on facebook about the special awards to be given on our graduation day, particularly the "best musician award." He told me if he has the chance to bag the award since kinukulit nga raw siya ng mom niya.

I really know that he will be one of the recipients kasi he is a great singer and  performer. You will really be amazed on his very powerful  voice and the way he performs.

Come graduation day (March 31, 2012), medyo nag-aagaw buhay na nga raw siya. Ilang beses na rin siyang nirevive raw and everything can happen in any minute. But that didn't stop Yuki to graduate and at least accept his diploma, by his mother in his behalf.

Everybody was very happy after the graduation rites because finally, we are now proclaimed as graduates and alumni of Claret School. But there was still part in our minds, worrying about the condition of Yuki. The night of our graduation day, we heard the really bad news. Yuki, our batch mate passed away at around 11:30pm. At first we don't want to believe but it was her sister who confirmed to us that he had already left us.

It was really difficult for me and especially to his family and closest friends to accept but I know that it was purposely done by God na rin para hindi na mag-suffer si Yuki. We miss you Yuki!

Lastly siyempre yung graduation day! Finally,  graduate na rin ako and 4 years nalang at tapos na ako mag-aral. Siyempre hindi ko magagawa ito if wala ang parents ko, ang mga kapatid, and mga teachers ko, ang mga classmates ko at siyempre si God. Kaya SALAMAT PO SA INYONG LAHAT!
